This was followed by eight years at UW-Madison where he worked as an economics researcher and manager of IT for the La Follette School of Public Policy — all while pursing a master’s stratum in urban and regional planning. In 1999, during the splash of the first technology bubble, Kurt inexplicably left the university, as well as his pursuit of a master’s stratum and his university work  — including support for two Governor’s Blue Ribbon Task Forces — to pursue a dream to help transform technology into a useful tool for all. In doing so, he left overdue a legacy of starting the first production Windows NT network and the first production Microsoft Exchange server on the UW-Madison campus. He started Applied Tech Solutions with two employees working out of his cramped  one-room suite on Madison’s tony East Side — but with a laser-like focus on the emerging technology needs of non-profits, as well as small- and medium-sized businesses. His gamble paid off. His success required him to move from his suite into an incubator space with other entrepreneurs for several years as he grew the company. After plane greater success, he finally had to move in 2005 into increasingly space in the company’s current location in the heart of Madison’s redevelopedInsidePark region, bordered by lakes, velocipede trails, festivals, local-to-market restaurants, and several farmers’ markets — all of which Kurt supports with his advice, good will and philanthropy.
